Excellent piece man. I was truly entertained and it made me homesick! I remember trying to call you that night and getting the "<i>iPhone ist kaput</i>" messages.

Note: Electricity scared the shit out of human beings with the erection of overhead power lines. It even reached the point of riot-inducing hysteria in New York City and to this day, Georgetown has a ban (from 1889) on any electrical current above the ground. It almost prevented the construction of our beloved St. Charles electric line. <a href="http://files.asme.org/ASMEORG/Communities/History/Landmarks/3106.pdf" rel="nofollow">Boring History Link.</a>

The main culprit was the heinous winter of 1888. The nascent technology of producing sturdy poles was no match for the buckets of ice and snow that crushed North America. The result was metallic-flavored tentacular death for thousands of American citizens. This generated serious debates all over the U.S. over the future of the technology. Imagine if there was a chance that you're iPhone could spontaneously kill you...

I know you weren't going for anything that heavy with your statement. It just prompted me to do some internet research and I thought I'd share. I totally agree that we live in strange and exciting times. Just thank whatever gods you worship that the cure for cancer is going to coincide with the wide-spread use of wireless electricity. Otherwise we'd all be fucked by Pluto's tumorous cock... So to speak.

Awesome article man. Great food for thought.

So much of the last decade has changed in terms of technology. In 1990, a mere 2o years ago, there was no Twitter, no GPS, no Facebook, no smart phones, no text messages, no digital camera. And look at us today! You didn't even mention our dependence on computers and the Internet. Where will we be in another twenty years?

During my family reunion I had to deal without an Internet connection. I was strangely satisfied. Interesting post. I've been thinking a lot about facebook (virtual self) suicides and I'm curious what it will take for large segments of our population to intentionally break away from technologies in order to reclaim their lost sense of independency.
